I fell in love with romance as an early teen. Subsisting on a steady diet of Victoria Holt gothics and Harlequin Romances, it did not take long before I began to fabricate my own stories. I wrote my first book, The Emerald Castle, at age 13. It was a truly awful historical novel, with a naive heroine and an arrogant hero. She loved him for no apparent reason, and he treated her like dirt. But the story had a beginning, middle, and end, which is farther than many people get. So I wrote on...and on....and on. I wrote all through college, then again after the birth of my first son. For ten years I got really serious and cranked out several manuscripts, writing and rewriting them. Somewhere along the way, it all came together. It wasn't the "How to" books that did it, it was sheer persistence and a good critic in the form of my friend, Sydney Baily-Gould. If there's a moral in this tale, it's this: You can do anything your heart desires, just never quit, never, never surrender! (Thank you Winston for those rousing words.) It seems only natural that I should pen military romances and not just medieval tales. I have been surrounded by the military all my life, from early childhood onward. My father was a Judge Advocate General in the US Air Force before transitioning to the civil service. I grew up overseas, going to international and American schools with other “Army Brats.” I married an Army officer to become an officer’s wife, experiencing first hand military traditions and protocol. Following his unexpected death, I remarried—this time an enlisted officer of the US Navy. He retired after twenty years of service to this fabulous country. Thanks to him, I get to work out at the base gym and shop at the commissary. I fell in love with military romances when I read Suzanne Brockmann’s first Troubleshooters book, The Unsung Hero. Since then, I’ve read and reread all her books. She is a huge source of inspiration for me and a really neat person as well! I sincerely hope my military love stories bring you, readers, as much diversion as Suzanne’s books have brought me.
