USA TODAY bestselling author Kelsey Roberts has written more than 25 books for Harlequin. She was attracted to romantic suspense because it allowed her to explore two of her favorite topics.
Romance has been a part of her life since she was swept off her feet by her husband of more than 20 years. His proposal was something right out of a novel — it was Christmas Eve and he popped the question right in the middle of an Annapolis street in front of the oldest building in the small city. It was an appropriate choice, since her husband was the oldest man she had ever dated. The 20-year age difference didn't matter. He loved her and he had dental insurance!
Her second fascination is rather macabre, but grounded in real-life experience. A childhood friend was killed by a serial killer. The murder was never solved. In the fictional world Roberts creates, the criminal is always brought to justice.
A perpetual student, Roberts has more certificates and degrees than the average thermometer. Her current fascination is in the area of victimology. She is working with a graduate advisor on approval of a thesis proposal on why women read and write crime fiction. As soon as they put 48 hours into the average day, she'll add that to her schedule.
Roberts is blessed with a wonderful, though unconventional, family. She lives in Maryland with her husband and daughter. Her husband gave her two great step-adults. They were blessed with a son, Kyle, who tragically died awaiting a heart transplant in 1999 at the age of 13. Still wanting a family, Roberts and her husband opted for adoption. They were blessed by being given a beautiful little girl from Russia. Labor was far easier than spending 23 days in Kursk. A high-maintenance woman should never go to a low-maintenance country.
Just in the last year she has become a step-grandmother twice over. She handled this as well as any 43-year-old woman with a five-year-old might. Gnawing through her wrist for a vein was not an option, so she happily embraced her unconventional family.
