How did a Yankee girl who used to be a 1775-era minuteman in a Boston re-enactment group end up in ENGLAND, of all places? Well, in 1994, I met a wonderful man over the Internet. He was handsome, intelligent, all that a romantic hero should be... but there was just one little catch -- he was English, and lived 3,000 miles away! Love always wins in the end, though, and following a romantic courtship in which our gilded coaches bore the names "British Airways" and "Virgin Atlantic," the good doctor from England asked me to marry him. Retiring my breeches, tricorn, and musket (Heathrow Airport has a terribly tight security system, I'm afraid), I moved myself and my German Shorthaired Pointer dog, Roscoe, to England, and in March of 1995 Chris and I were married. For over two years we lived in a lovely, picturesque town by the River Thames, just south of Oxford -- the ancient and beautiful "City of Dreaming Spires," along with our cat Gemma. Now we live in the equally picturesque, and historic seaport town of Newburyport, Massachusetts, in an 18th century house, with Roscoe, Gemma, and Poppy -- a lovely German Shorthaired Pointer who is the newest addition to our family. A lot of friends thought I was reckless and crazy to make that initial move to England, but I have never regretted my decision. Sometimes you have to risk all for love... even if it does mean doing something like, oh, picking up your life and moving to another country! And yet, I ask no less of the heroines of my books. I find satisfaction in knowing that they, too, face similar risks and challenges in the name of love... and like me, end up with strong, wonderful men who love, cherish, and adore them.
