Barbara Hannay began sharing stories before she could write by producing movies for her younger sisters. She would draw pictures on large sheets of paper and pass these through the wooden slats in orange boxes. Later, she progressed to writing and illustrating comics and magazines on the backs of her father’s discarded blueprints. As a teenager, she filled exercise books with poetry and short stories.
Once she became a wife and mother, she wrote stories for her children, but she never actively pursued a writing career. In fact one of her sons beat her to publication, having his first play published when he was 18.
She encouraged her four children to pursue their artistic dreams and has watched her sons set off for exciting opportunities overseas, while her daughters both have professional careers in the arts in Australia — one as a violinist and the other as a dancer.
It was only after her children’s dreams were becoming fulfilled that Barbara thought seriously about her own love of writing. She was teaching a unit of popular fiction to her 11th grade English class, when she discovered category romance and from that point she was hooked, first as a reader and then as a writer of romance.
Barbara has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Queensland and was halfway through a Masters Degree in Education when she decided that trying to have a romance novel accepted for publication was a bigger and more exciting challenge.
She enjoys writing about the Australian Outback and draws on camping and canoeing holidays she had with her family. Barbara’s husband, Elliot, is a former journalist and newspaper editor and has been her biggest fan and number one supporter. She says that without him she would never have succeeded.
These days they live on magical Magnetic Island, a part of the Great Barrier Reef and a world heritage site, which she claims is one of the most beautiful, untouched places on earth and yet is only a 20-minute ferry ride from the busy city of Townsville.
