Life at home with three children under 6 was wonderful but confining. Even a short trip the grocery story constituted as much planning as a land and sea assault. So, I stayed put as much as possible. Then one magical day, while listening to the Sleeping Beauty video from the kitchen (for the ten thousandth time), I began to wonder just what would this darling girl do if she was, say, dropped into a pirate story. Would she keep her sweet disposition? Or would she rally to the occasion and teach those nasty pirates a thing or two? From this distracted musing was born the idea that maybe I could write a story and manipulate my characters (you don't have to reason with characters like you do children . . . well, not most of the time) into strange and wonderful situations. And so was born my first book which was enthusiastically penned, polished and shoved under the bed, where it still resides.
Since those days, my children have grown and so has my love of writing. I have eleven books either on the shelves or under contract. When I'm not writing I work as supervisor of the North Carolina Nematode Assay Laboratory (I know, I know. We test soil for tiny, little worms that attack the roots of field crops like corn, soybeans, tobacco, etc.) I went to school to do this, I really did. I graduated from NC State University with a degree in Horticulture, but with a minor in English.
Two cats keep my keyboard warm while I'm not home and one helps me drink my coffee at 4:00 in the morning when I get up to write (thank goodness for programmable coffee makers). In addition to three teenagers and a husband, I share my home with two dogs, a house rabbit and a turtle.
