Laurie Kingery was born in Texas, the only child of a career Army officer and his wife. When she was three, the family moved to Columbus Ohio suburb of Bexley after a tour of duty in Germany. During a family medical crisis, the entire family became born-again Christians and joined an evangelical church. That faith has been Laurie’s “Rock” ever since. During her school years, Laurie discovered her love of books and her talent for writing. She began her first “book,” an ongoing story about a dog and a horse, on her dad’s battered manual typewriter. In high school, she composed a series of love stories about the Beatles for the amusement of her friends, and dreamed of being a writer, but even then Laurie realized she’d have to have a stable job to indulge that dream. She graduated from Grant School of Nursing in 1972, married and had two daughters, Danielle and Stephanie. She chose the busy urban emergency department of a Level-One trauma hospital, Grant Medical Center, for her nursing career because of its innate drama and unpredictability. In her off hours, she became the first woman to join her rural township’s volunteer fire department. At one point she left the E.R. to fly on her hospital’s new medical helicopter for its first couple of years, and tried her hand at office nursing, but she always returned to the E.R. Laurie hadn’t given up her dream of writing fiction, however. The boom in romance novels was in its heyday when Laurie received the challenge to begin her first novel before she was thirty years old. Her first effort was a medieval romance, and with the help of her first agent, she sold it, taking the pen name of Laurie Grant after the name of her hospital. The book was published by Leisure as DEFIANT HEART in 1987. It was nominated by Romantic Times as “Best First Medieval.” Her second medieval, also from Leisure, came out that same year. Books #3 and 4 sold to Warner Popular Library, and then she moved to Harlequin Historicals. She won the National Reader’s Choice award for “THE RAVEN AND THE SWAN” in 1994. By the time she wrote her eighth book, though, Laurie was ready to do something different and moved into westerns, reaching into her Texas roots, and was eventually nominated for a “Career Achievement Award” in westerns by Romantic Times. Laurie did two more westerns for Leisure before the Lord closed that door to Laurie and moved her gently but firmly into an interest in writing for the inspirational market under her own name. The inspirational fiction field was undergoing phenomenal—some would say Heaven-sent—growth, and it wasn’t long before Harlequin/Silhouette recognized that and began their Steeple Hill imprint, expanding that to include a Steeple Hill Love Inspired Historical line. Laurie’s first book, HILL COUNTRY CHRISTMAS, will be released in October ’08. It’s set in Post-Civil War Texas. Her second book from that line, currently titled PICTURE OF AN OUTLAW, has no release date as yet but will also be set in Texas. Laurie met her new husband through eHarmony.com. A Christian like herself, he is an avid fisherman and bass guitarist, playing both for their church praise team and an oldies band. Laurie now lives in rural Ohio with her husband and their menagerie. In her spare time, Laurie enjoys reading romance and suspense. She always has several books in the process of being read—at home, at work, in her purse for those times spent in lines…She spends time online with writer friends, watching favorite TV shows, and playing with her three dogs and two cats. She is now the proud grandma of six, plus two step-grandchildren. She is still working in the E.R., and has been a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, or S.A.N.E. Someday she hopes to sell a medical suspense book she has written based on her experiences as a S.A.N.E.
