Reviewer Comments:

Anna DeStefano brings us a novella about moving forward and forgiving. She transports us to a small town in Georgia where everyone knows everyone else’s business and the gossip travels fast. We meet some unique individuals who have made it their life’s work to improve the lives of those around them.

Dru Hampton has never known her birth parents, but she has been raised by a wonderful foster family who has helped her to become the person that she is now. She runs a local youth group teaching kids how to defend themselves from bullies and other dangers while managing the local diner. She lives with a curmudgeon of an old woman, Vi, whom she adores. The only sad part of her life is the boy she has loved forever.

Brad Douglas was always a part of Dru’s life. He hung out with her older foster brothers and seemed to care about Dru. When she tried to kiss him as a teenager, he went on a bender that resulted in her foster brother leaving town and not contacting the family and him moving to Savannah. Whenever he came back to town to visit his grandmother, the woman that Dru lives with, he stayed out of Dru’s way. Now his grandmother is dying and he is back for a while. Can Dru put her hurt aside and figure out a way to get along with him?

Brad and Dru still care for each other. That is obvious from the moment we see them together and everyone in their lives knows it. They just need to figure out a way to get past the hurt from so many years ago and to find their way back to each other. Fortunately, Vi has some ideas of her own and isn’t afraid to manipulate her dying to get what she thinks is best for both of them. Watching them struggle to communicate is at times heart wrenching and comical as they have misunderstanding after misunderstanding.

I really enjoyed this story. For being a novella, Ms. DeStefano sure packs a lot into it. Not only do we see the relationship between Dru and Brad evolve, we also meet Dru’s newest foster sister, Lisa, who has her own issues. We see the caring of the town’s people as they rally around Vi as she lives out her final moments.
