Sara Richardson starts her newest series off with a story about the oldest Cortez brother. The Cortez brothers had their lives torn apart when their mother walked out on them. Their father, Luis, didn’t handle it well and threw himself into his bullriding career leaving the boys to raise themselves. When the middle son gets put in jail for arson, Luis finally realizes that his sons need him and begins to be at home more, but the relationship between the boys and their father is not the same. Lance Cortez knows that his bullriding career is almost over. He can feel it in his slow times and the aches in his body. He just needs to win Worlds so that he can go out on top rather than slinking out with his tail between his legs. In order to train, he needs to find someone who can spend time with his father. Luis seems to be wandering off more frequently and has some confused moments. Knowing that Luis has a good relationship with Jessa, Lance hopes that she will agree to help in exchange for some of the prize money he is sure to win. He just needs to concentrate on riding and not on Jessa and her fine body. Jessa Mae Love has returned to Topaz Falls, Colorado to take over her father’s animal rescue after his unexpected death. She is heartbroken at the loss of her father, but having his best friend, Luis, spend time with her at the rescue center makes things a little easier. When Lance makes a deal to have Jessa help keep an eye on Luis, she decides to take him up on it. She just needs to remember that she has sworn off men and all relationships. Watching the interplay between Jessa and Lance makes for a delightful story. They both have baggage. Lance doesn’t want to let anyone in since he doesn’t think real love exists. Look at his parents and then all the relationships that his father had after his mother left. Jessa falls in love too quickly and often finds herself hurt afterwards. They are definitely opposites in the romance department. Ms. Richardson sets up the romances for the other two Cortez brothers in this book. Their stories are sure to be just as interesting as Lance’s is. I look forward to reading them.
