In her newest series, Kerrelyn Sparks takes her readers to another time and place. A place where there are 4 connected kingdoms and 1 kingdom made of 2 islands. The 4 connected kingdoms are constantly at war while the island country remains its own. On one of the islands is where those born when the two moons align are sent to avoid death. These children are known as the Embraced and they have special powers. Luciana Vintello was sent to the island when she was born as one of the Embraced. She has lived her entire life in the safety of the convent and has been taken care of. She calls the other girls who have been sent there, her sisters and they all have an unbreakable bond. Now the Duke of Vindalyn has arrived on the island with his deceased daughter, Luciana’s twin. He wants Luciana to take her twin’s place and marry the man called the Beast to protect both of their lives. Leofric of Benwick, Lord Protector of the Realm, is also known as the Beast. He is Embraced. He can gather lightning and use its power during battle. He is also the nephew of the King of Eberon. The king wants his nephew dead and thought he could ensure it by making Leo the Lord Protector. He didn’t realize that Leo is so much stronger than he ever thought. I loved this modern retelling of Beauty and the Beast. I love that Ms. Sparks took it to a fantasy world where all things magic are possible and gave both Leo and Luciana something in common. There are a number of secrets which each of them hold and watching them figure out who they can trust and whether they can trust each other makes a story that is hard to put down. As I read this story, my heart broke for the loneliness that both Leo and Luciana felt. Luciana was abandoned by her family at birth and has been raised as an orphan. She has found friends, but she still longs to know her family. When she finally reunites with them, she does so by pretending to be her twin which sets up a barrier between her and others. Leo has been forced to stay away from others since he can transfer the power of the lightning through his touch. No one can get close to him without risking injury or death. These two characters need to find happiness and love. I am excited to see what is in store for Luciana’s sisters from the convent. I can only imagine how amazing and dangerous their journeys will be since they are also Embraced.
